It developed rapidly during the 20th century
with the discovery of coal in the Campine region,
transforming what had been a quiet rural area into an important mining center.
For decades, the Beringen coal mine attracted workers from across Belgium and abroad,
creating a diverse community shaped by industry and solidarity.
Today, the former mine site of Be-MINE has been transformed
into one of the largest industrial heritage projects in Flanders,
with preserved mining buildings, museums,
and recreational spaces that keep the memory of the mining era alive.
Few places in Belgium illustrate industrial heritage and renewal so visibly.

Modern Beringen blends this past
with open green spaces and a relaxed urban atmosphere.
Cycling routes, nature reserves, and nearby forests offer recreation,
while cultural events, local cafés, and community life
give the city a welcoming and down-to-earth character.
The mix of industrial landmarks
and modern redevelopment adds to its unique identity.

Beringen is a place where mining towers meet green landscapes,
where industrial memory stands beside modern leisure spaces
and cafés, and where the city continues to redefine itself with quiet confidence.
